  • Pull the wheel and look for fluid stains around the piston boot. Even a tiny wet spot means the seal is failing.
  • Check the slider pins. If one boot is torn, the pin is usually dry and corroded.
  • Compress the piston with a proper caliper tool. It should move smoothly. If it jerks or sticks, the caliper is seizing.
  • Check the parking brake lever or electronic brake actuator. A rear caliper can mechanically fail even when the hydraulic side is fine.
  • Verify whether the caliper is left/right specific. Some rear calipers are handed; some are shared. The VIN is the only reliable way to know.

The most frustrating part of rear caliper repair: a torn boot that fails for no obvious reason. You'd think a visual inspection during a tire rotation would catch it, but the boot's inner wall can tear and leak without showing anything from the outside. By the time the driver feels a vibration, the pads are ruined and the rotor has a hard spot.

This is also where time certainty matters. In March 2024, we needed a rear caliper for a delivery van sitting in the bay. The local warehouse had a brand-new one for $340. Another supplier had a remanufactured one for $215, but it wouldn't arrive until the next day. The van was supposed to be at a client event the next morning.

We paid $340. That's not a waste. The alternative wasn't $125 in savings; it was $15,000 in event risk. I've made the phone call to a customer saying 'we can't make it' enough times to know that uncertainty is a fee hidden in the fine print.

Step 4: Seven Signs Serpentine Belt Is Bad

I'll keep this one pretty simple. If you know the signs serpentine belt is bad, you can catch it before a tow truck gets involved.

  • Squealing when the engine is cold or when the steering wheel is turned to lock.
  • Visible cracks on the ribbed side. If you see cracks in more than two or three ribs, replace it.
  • Glazing. The belt surface looks shiny and hard instead of matte rubber.
  • Fraying or chunks missing from the edges.
  • The belt tensioner wobbles or makes a rattling noise while the engine is running.
  • The battery or alternator light flickers because the belt is slipping enough to drop alternator output.
  • Engine temperature creeps up in traffic if the water pump is driven by the same belt.

It's basically a visual and audible check. A $32 belt replacement beats a $1,200 tow and a missed deadline. And if the belt has more than 60,000 miles on it, replace it while you're doing coolant or alternator work. I've seen a brand-new alternator get blamed for a charging problem that was actually a worn belt.

Common Mistakes That Turn a Cheap Repair Into a Comeback

Before you start ordering parts, here are the mistakes I still catch in our own team:

  1. Using a part number from an old invoice without checking the revision. The Exedy 07099 and 08951 are different in friction, torque rating, and pedal feel. Both are good. Neither is a substitute for the other.
  2. Skipping the spark plug torque spec. Hand-tight is not a torque spec. A loose plug causes a misfire; an over-tightened one cracks and damages the cylinder head.
