The oil in there gets hot, shears down, and collects wear particles. It doesn't last forever.

Back in September 2022, I skipped a differential service because the previous owner of a truck said the rear end was “sealed for life.” It wasn't. The carrier bearing started making noise a few months later. What was supposed to be a $60 fluid service turned into a $900 repair, and I still regret not checking the service history myself (mental note: never trust “lifetime” fluid claims without seeing the service records).
