The call came in at 4:47 on a Friday. Dave owns a small repair shop about an hour from our warehouse. That's a TCO instinct, too. A spark plug wrench costs about $15. A cracked porcelain from a sloppy install costs a lot more. Knowing when a job is more than the tool is part of the total cost calculation.

The courier pulled in at 8:12 PM. Dave signed for a box with the Exedy logo on the side. I don't think every job needs a premium part. But I do think every job needs a total cost conversation before a purchase order goes out. If someone asks me “isn't there something cheaper?” I now ask back: “Cheaper now, or cheaper after installation, diagnosis, and downtime?”

The differential analyzer told Dave not to buy a $2,800 differential. The flex pipe replaced during the clutch job saved him from paying labor twice. The $15 spark plug wrench stopped a $400 mistake. And the Exedy Stage 1 clutch and flywheel kit—bought after a $400 failure and a $180 rush fee—was, in the end, the cheap option.
